Les Frères Dutruy in Founex,Vaud is a fourth-generationfamily estate run by brothers Julienand Christian Dutruy. Founded in1917 by their grandfather, it remains firmly in family hands. I was first struck by this production when I tasted their excellent organic wines at Wine Paris in February 2024, my favourite being the Pinot Noir – vibrant with fruit, terroir, and finesse– which lingered in my memory. I turned to Reva, editor-in-chief of Sommelier India, and remarked in amazement that this vineyard was a stone’s throw from where I lived in France. I never imagined that we would visit it one day. When listing the delights of places to visit in Switzerland, Reva had one request – to visit LesFrères Dutruy. And we did! What makes this estate distinctive is their focus on small production, emphasising quality over volume. Seasonal workers are welcome with official contracts, free on-site housing, and full health cover and insurance.
Over the years the Dutruy brothers have expanded their ownership of vineyards, so essential at a time when families are selling their viticultural holdings for more lucrative and less labour-intensive enterprises. Also, as much of the younger generation is loth to put in the hard work that wine production requires, vineyards are at risk of being sold for property development.
Therefore it is commendable that Julien and Christian are preserving their vineyard holdings in and around Founex as well as expanding in the prestigious Lavaux region.

The focus at Les Frères Dutruy is on “natural” and organic styles: whites such as Chasselas, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris; reds led by Gamay and Pinot Noir; plus two refreshing rosés - Gamay and Pinot Noir – perfect for Europe’s current heat wave. Their flagship assemblage, Les Romaines, is outstanding. All wines are priced reasonably between 16 and 30 CHF. So on your next trip to the Geneva area, make sure you stock up at Les Frères Dutruy – one of the most welcoming and forwardthinking wineries in the region.
